What is Psychosexual Therapy?
This introductory talk is not about delivering or learning to use psychosexual therapy. It aims, rather, to acquaint therapists from other modalities with what psychosexual therapy is about. The presentation should answer the question, ‘What do psychosexual therapists do, who are their clients and what specifically do they address?’ Importantly, those who attend should be better informed about making referrals to sex therapy.
Psychosexual therapy is chiefly, although not exclusively, delivered as a cognitive-behavioural therapy. Accordingly, the presentation will be structured as follows:
- The behavioural beginnings of sex therapy. Cognitive-behavioural principles as applied to sex therapy. How psychodynamic understandings may supplement CBT.
- What are the sexual dysfunctions?
- Assessment for sex therapy. Factors suggesting suitability for sex therapy and referrals to sex therapy.
- Treatment of dysfunctions.
- Transcultural issues.
We will develop some scenarios around the question of assessment, perhaps using role-play. The day aims to be collaborative rather than ‘lecture-style’, so suggestions from attendees about how the material might be brought to life are welcome.
Richard Newbury is a couples therapist and psychosexual therapist with an MSc in Sexual and Relationship Psychotherapy. He also works as a supervisor.
Lunch will be provided to participants on the day.
Fee: £25 for members £30 for non members
